Methodology

Here is exactly how we research, select, and rank the equipment we recommend on Engine Equipment Guide.

Selection criteria

  • Workshop suitability: does it actually fit the use case we are recommending it for?
  • Durability under sustained use: we weight long-running reliability over peak specs
  • Maintenance friendliness: serviceability matters as much as performance
  • Owner feedback over time: we read long-term reviews, not just first-year impressions
  • Manufacturer support: warranty terms, parts availability, dealer network

How we score

Editor scores combine durability, value, serviceability, and workshop fit. We do not pretend our scores are universal — a 9.4 for a fleet operator does not mean 9.4 for a weekend hobbyist. Where it matters, we name the use case the score applies to.

Quarterly review cycle

Every quarter we revisit the editor pick list, the kit bundles, and the equipment database. Items are removed if discontinued, replaced if a substantially better option emerges, and re-scored if long-term feedback shifts.

What we do not do

  • We do not publish prices on this site — Amazon pricing moves daily, so we let you check live prices via our affiliate links instead
  • We do not invent aggregate review counts or fake ratings
  • We do not accept payment for editor pick placement
  • We do not recommend dangerous repair shortcuts
