Kohler home generators are permanent standby generators that switch on by themselves when the power goes out. They run on your home’s natural gas or propane, restore power in about ten seconds, and come in sizes from 10 kW for a small home to 150 kW for an estate. If you have been searching for a Kohler residential generator, you are in the right place.
Here is the short version. The heart of the range is three air-cooled models: the 14RCA, 20RCA and 26RCA. Most homes end up with the 20 or the 26. Kohler lists a premium five-year limited warranty, sound levels as low as 56 dB(A) during the weekly exercise on the 26RCA, and enclosures tested to 181 mph winds. And yes, they are still sold as Kohler, even though the company behind them is now called Rehlko.
This guide untangles the model names, shows you the real specs from Kohler’s own product pages, explains what size you need and how much gas each model uses, and points you to current listings you can actually buy.

Quick answer
Kohler makes air-cooled home standby generators at 10, 12, 14, 20 and 26 kW and liquid-cooled models from 24 kW to 150 kW. All run on natural gas or propane and carry a premium five-year limited warranty. The 20RCA (20 kW) suits most homes and the 26RCA (26 kW) suits larger homes with heavy air conditioning. Models ending in RCAL include an automatic transfer switch. Models ending in RCA do not.
How we put this guide together
We have not installed or tested these generators ourselves. The specs come from Kohler’s official home generator product pages, from dealer spec pages and from current Amazon listings, all checked in October 2026. We do not publish prices. Kohler shows a suggested retail price for each model on its own site, but the installed cost depends on your home.

Is Kohler Still Kohler? The Rehlko Question
This confuses a lot of shoppers, so let us clear it up first.
Kohler’s power business, called Kohler Energy, was separated from the plumbing company. An investment firm, Platinum Equity, became the majority owner in May 2024, and Kohler Co. kept a minority stake. In September 2024 the business took a new name: Rehlko.
So what changed for you? Very little. Kohler’s own home generator site puts it this way: Kohler Generators is part of Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, and homeowners continue to receive the same Kohler home standby generators, with the same dealer network, warranty protection and customer support. Some dealers now list the products as “Rehlko (formerly Kohler)”. It is the same machine either way.
Kohler also states that its residential standby generators, including their engines, are designed, engineered and assembled in the USA.
Key insight: if a dealer quotes you a Rehlko generator and a Kohler generator with the same model number, you are looking at the same product.
How a Kohler Home Generator Works
A standby generator is bolted down outside your home and wired into your electrical system through an automatic transfer switch. The switch watches the utility power. When it fails, the generator starts, the switch moves your home onto generator power, and the lights come back. When the grid returns, the system switches back and the generator shuts down.
There is no fuel to pour and no cord to pull. That is the big difference from a portable generator. If you are still deciding between the two, our guide to portable vs standby generators lays out the trade-offs.
The Kohler Home Generator Lineup

| Weight | 433 lb | 440 lb | 555 lb | 625 lb |
| Listed response time | 10 seconds | 10 seconds | 10 seconds | 10 seconds |
There is also a 10 kW 10RESV and a 12 kW 12RES for small homes. Kohler describes the 12RESV as a compact, entry-level model that can be installed as close as 18 inches from your home and pairs well with a solar battery system.
A few things stand out in that table:
- The 14RCA is off-grid rated. Kohler says it can run as primary power for a cabin or remote home, not only as backup.
- The 20RCA is the all-rounder. Kohler calls it one of its most popular standby models.
- The 26RCA is the quiet one. Its 90-second eco-exercise runs at 56 dB(A), which Kohler compares to the volume of a conversation. Kohler says no air-cooled generator is quieter, and that this is its highest selling model.
Liquid-cooled models: for big homes and hot climates
Above 26 kW, Kohler moves to liquid-cooled generators with car-style engines that turn at 1,800 rpm instead of 3,600.
| Spec | 24RCLA | 48RCLC |
|---|---|---|
| Rating on LP | 24 kW | 48 kW |
| Rating on NG | 21 kW | 48 kW |
| Engine | 2.2 liter inline four | 6.2 liter V-8 |
| Engine speed | 1,800 rpm | 1,800 rpm |
| Sound, weekly exercise | 54 dB(A) | 57 dB(A) |
| Sound, full speed | 61 dB(A) | 61 dB(A) |
| Weight | 1,260 lb | 1,690 lb |
The liquid-cooled family also includes the 30RCLA, 38RCLC and 60RCLB, then 80, 100 and 125 kW models and a 150 kW unit at the top.
Why choose liquid cooling? Kohler’s answer is simple. It is better suited to higher altitudes and hotter climates, and the lower engine speed makes these units quieter and longer lasting. The price and the weight are in a different league, so they only make sense for large homes.
What the Kohler Model Names Mean
Kohler model numbers look like alphabet soup. They are easier than they seem.
- The number is the size. A 20RCA is a 20 kW generator.
- RCA means generator only. Kohler says the transfer switch is sold separately, which gives flexibility for custom installations.
- RCAL means generator plus switch. Kohler says RCAL models include a transfer switch as a convenient all-in-one system.
- 200SELS is the switch. A listing such as 20RCAL-200SELS bundles a 200-amp, service-entrance rated transfer switch with load shedding.
- RCL is liquid-cooled. As in 24RCLA or 48RCLC.
You will also see older names in searches and on used units: 14RESA, 20RESA, 20RESAL, 20RESCL and 30RESA. These are earlier generations. The RCA and RCL families have replaced them, so the 20RCA is today’s version of the old 20 kW models, and the 30RCLA covers the 30 kW class.
What Size Kohler Generator Do You Need?
Kohler’s own advice is the right place to start: the best way to find your size is to have a generator professional do a site survey and analyze your electrical load. You can still arrive at that meeting prepared.
- Decide what you want backed up. Essentials only, or the whole house as if nothing happened?
- List your largest loads. Central air conditioners, electric water heaters, ranges, dryers, well pumps and EV chargers.
- Count your air conditioners. Starting a central air unit takes a large burst of power. It is usually what decides the size.
- Check your electrical service. A 200-amp service pairs with a 200-amp transfer switch.
- Ask about load shedding. A switch with load management can let a smaller generator cover a whole home by making large appliances take turns.
As a rough guide only: Kohler positions the 10, 12 and 14 kW models for essential needs such as the furnace fan, refrigerator, sump pump, lights and well pump. The 20RCA is its whole-home model for typical houses, and the 26RCA is for larger homes with heavier cooling loads.
Want a head start? Add up your appliances with our Generator Size Calculator, then read our guide to whole-house generators.
Tip: look at the motor starting number
Kohler publishes a figure called peak motor starting kVA. It tells you how well a generator copes with the surge of a big motor starting, such as a central air conditioner. The 14RCA is listed at 33 kVA, the 20RCA at 41 kVA and the 26RCA at 39 kVA. When two generators have similar kW ratings, this number is a useful tie-breaker.
Key Kohler Features, in Plain English
PowerBoost
Kohler says PowerBoost lets the generator start large loads without dropping power to other appliances. In real life that means the lights should not sag when the air conditioner kicks in.
Ten-second response
Every air-cooled model lists a 10-second response time. Kohler describes the 26RCA as able to power an entire home in under 10 seconds.
The controller and the app
All of these models use Kohler’s RDC2 controller, and remote monitoring is listed as included. The Kohler Energy Management app lets you check on the generator from your phone, at home or away.
A tough enclosure, in your choice of color
Kohler says its enclosures are designed to endure winds up to 181 mph and that its commercial-grade engines are tested for 2,000 hours of continuous operation. The RCA models also come in a dozen colors, including two camouflage patterns, which can help with homeowner association rules.
Warranty and service
Kohler lists a premium five-year limited warranty, and dealer spec sheets describe it as 5 years or 2,000 hours. Kohler also says its dealers travel up to 200 miles for service and that an extended warranty is available.
Natural Gas, Propane and Fuel Use
Kohler home generators run on natural gas or liquid propane. The home lineup shown on Kohler’s site has no gasoline or diesel models. If you were looking for a diesel Kohler generator, that belongs to the company’s industrial range, not its home standby line.
Kohler publishes fuel use at half load for each model. It is measured in cubic feet per hour, or cfh.
| Model | Natural gas at half load | Propane at half load |
|---|---|---|
| 12RESV | 128 cfh | 57 cfh |
| 14RCA | 124 cfh | 60 cfh |
| 20RCA | 161 cfh | 82 cfh |
| 26RCA | 180 cfh | 85 cfh |
What does that mean in practice? On natural gas, the supply is continuous, so the main question is whether your meter and piping can deliver enough gas. On propane, these numbers decide your tank size. A gallon of liquid propane makes roughly 36 cubic feet of vapor, so a 20RCA at half load uses a little over two gallons an hour. Your propane supplier can turn that into a tank size for the number of days you want to ride out.

The Best Kohler Home Generators to Buy

Buying and Installing a Kohler Home Generator
Kohler’s buying process runs through local dealers. Its site lays out four steps:
- Contact Kohler by phone or use the free quote form.
- Get connected to a local certified Kohler dealer.
- Receive a no-obligation quote for the generator and its installation.
- Have the dealer install it.
Kohler says the final price is set by your dealer and depends on customization and installation type. That is normal for standby generators. The unit is only one line on the bill. The rest is the pad, the electrical work, the gas plumbing, permits and startup.
Placement is flexible with the RCA models. Kohler dealers describe them as designed for installations as close as 18 inches to a structure. Your installer still has to follow the installation manual and local code, which control where the unit may sit relative to windows, doors and vents.
Leave the hookup to licensed professionals
A standby generator connects to your home’s electrical service and gas supply. Mistakes can cause fire, gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning or deadly backfeed onto utility lines. Have it installed by a certified dealer or by a licensed electrician and gas fitter, with permits and inspection. Keep working carbon monoxide alarms inside your home.
Keeping It Ready: Maintenance and Cold Weather
A standby generator spends nearly all its life waiting. A little attention keeps it ready.
- Let it exercise. The weekly exercise keeps the engine and battery healthy. On the 26RCA it is a quiet 90 seconds.
- Service it on schedule. Use the maintenance kit for your engine and follow the owner’s manual.
- Check the battery. A weak starting battery is a classic reason a standby generator fails to start.
- Keep it clear. Remove snow, leaves and weeds from around the enclosure.
- Prepare for winter. Kohler recommends cold weather accessories to help the generator start and run smoothly when temperatures drop below 32°F.
- Use the app. Remote monitoring is included, so let it tell you about problems before the storm does.
For the routine jobs that apply to every generator, see our generator maintenance checklist.
Common Mistakes When Buying a Kohler Home Generator (and the Fix)
Pro Tips From Kohler’s Own Paperwork
- Ask for the site survey first. Kohler itself says a professional load analysis is the best way to choose a size.
- Use load shedding to save money. A switch with load management can let a 20 kW unit do a job you thought needed 26 kW.
- Pick a color on purpose. With a dozen finishes, you can match the house or hide the unit, and satisfy your homeowner association.
- Put the generator where the noise matters least. Even a quiet unit is better placed away from bedrooms.
- Register the warranty as soon as the unit is commissioned.
- Keep a maintenance kit on the shelf. Parts sell out during wide outages.
- Ask about the 200-mile service promise. If you live far from town, find out which dealer will actually come to you.
