The Honda EU2000i is a 2,000-watt inverter generator that weighs about 46 pounds and runs quietly enough for a campsite. Honda sold it from the early 2000s until 2018, when the EU2200i took its place. A great many are still in use.

This guide is for owners and for anyone looking at a used one. You will find the official specs and dimensions, what the generator can and cannot run, the full maintenance schedule, the problems that stop it starting, and the rules for linking it to a newer Honda.

Everything here comes from Honda’s own owner’s manuals and service bulletins. We have not tested the generator ourselves.

Quick answer

The Honda EU2000i delivers 1,600 rated watts and 2,000 maximum watts at 120 volts from a 98.5 cc Honda GX100 engine. It measures 20.2 x 11.4 x 16.7 inches and weighs about 46 pounds dry. It takes 13.5 ounces of 10W-30 oil and an NGK CR5HSB spark plug. Honda replaced it with the EU2200i in 2018. Later EU2000i units can be linked in parallel with an EU2200i, but only within certain serial numbers.

How we put this guide together

We have not tested this generator. Specs, maintenance intervals and troubleshooting steps come from two official Honda owner’s manuals for the EU2000i, one from early production and one from late production. Parallel details come from a Honda bulletin dated 2018. Product links go to current Amazon listings, checked in October 2026. Honda’s manuals do not state a noise level or a run time, so where we mention those we name the source.

What Is the Honda EU2000i?

The EU2000i is a small gasoline inverter generator. An inverter generator cleans up its electricity electronically, so the power is steady enough for laptops, TVs and phone chargers.

It became a favorite for three reasons.

  • It is easy to carry. At about 46 pounds, one person can lift it with one hand.
  • It is quiet. Retailer spec sheets list 53 to 59 dB(A), depending on the load.
  • It sips fuel. Honda’s Eco-Throttle system slows the engine when demand is low.

Honda’s website now sends visitors looking for the EU2000i to the EU2200i page. That is as clear a sign as any that the EU2200i is its official successor.

Honda EU2000i Specs and Dimensions

Source: Honda owner’s manuals for the EU2000i. Dry weight is 45.9 lb in the early manual and 45.6 lb in the late one.
Spec Honda EU2000i
Maximum output 2,000 watts (2.0 kVA)
Rated output 1,600 watts (1.6 kVA)
Rated current 13.3 amps
Voltage and frequency 120 V, 60 Hz
Engine Honda GX100, 4-stroke, overhead camshaft, single cylinder
Displacement 98.5 cc (6.01 cubic inches)
Length 20.2 inches (512 mm)
Width 11.4 inches (290 mm)
Height 16.7 inches (425 mm)
Dry weight 45.6 to 45.9 lb
Fuel tank 0.95 US gallon (3.6 L)
Oil capacity 13.5 ounces (0.40 L)
Spark plug NGK CR5HSB
Spark plug gap 0.024 to 0.028 inch (0.6 to 0.7 mm)
DC output For charging 12-volt automotive batteries only, 8 amps maximum

You may see slightly different numbers on old retail listings. Some quote a length of 20.1 inches, a weight of 46.3 pounds or a larger fuel tank. The figures above are the ones printed in Honda’s manuals.

A note on noise and run time. Honda’s manuals do not give either figure. Retailer spec sheets quote 59 dB(A) at rated load and 53 dB(A) at quarter load, with roughly 4 hours of running at rated load and up to 9.6 hours at quarter load. Treat the run times as best-case numbers.

What Can a Honda EU2000i Run?

The number that matters is 1,600 watts. That is what the generator can deliver hour after hour.

It can go up to 2,000 watts for short bursts. Honda’s manual is specific about this: power between the rated and maximum figures may be used for no more than 30 minutes.

Here is what that means in real life.

  • Comfortably: lights, phone and laptop chargers, a TV, a fan and a refrigerator.
  • One at a time: a microwave, a coffee maker, a hair dryer or a small power tool. Each can use most of the generator’s output.
  • Not on one generator: a 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner, most well pumps or anything that needs 240 volts.

Motors are the tricky part. They need a burst of extra power to start. The manual says the red overload light may flash when a motor starts, and that this is normal if it goes out within four seconds.

Controls and Features, in Plain English

Eco-Throttle

With the Eco-Throttle switch on, the engine slows down when you are using little power and speeds up when you plug something in. Honda recommends leaving it on to save fuel and cut noise.

Turn it off in two cases. First, when you connect several large loads at once, because that reduces voltage changes. Second, when you use the DC charging outlet.

The green and red lights

The green output light shows the generator is making power. It also works as a simple hour meter. When you start the engine, it blinks to show how many hours the generator has run.

Source: Honda EU2000i owner’s manual, late production.
Blinks at start-up Total running hours
None 0 to 100
1 100 to 200
2 200 to 300
3 300 to 400
4 400 to 500
5 500 or more

The red overload light comes on if you ask for more than the generator can give, or if an appliance has a short circuit. After about four seconds the generator cuts power to the outlets. The engine keeps running. Unplug the load, find the cause and restart.

Oil Alert

If the oil level drops too low, the Oil Alert system stops the engine before damage is done. If the generator suddenly stops and will not restart, check the oil first.

The DC outlet

The 12-volt DC outlet is for charging automotive batteries only. The manual warns that its output is not regulated, and that the protector does not prevent overcharging. Do not use it to run 12-volt gadgets.

The fuel cap vent

The fuel cap has a small vent lever. It must be ON to run the generator and OFF to carry or store it. A closed vent is the first item in Honda’s “engine will not start” chart.

Running Two Honda EU2000i Generators in Parallel

One of the cleverest things about the EU2000i is that two can be joined with a parallel cable kit. You get nearly double the power when you need it and one light generator when you do not.

Honda’s 2018 bulletin gives the exact figures.

Source: Honda parallel operation bulletin for EU2200i and EU2000i generators, 2018. Maximum power is limited to 30 minutes.
Pair Rated power Maximum power
Two EU2000i generators 3,200 watts (26.7 amps) 4,000 watts (33.3 amps)
One EU2000i and one EU2200i 3,400 watts (28.3 amps) 4,200 watts (35.0 amps)
Two EU2200i generators 3,600 watts (30.0 amps) 4,400 watts (36.7 amps)

That is usually enough for a 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner, which a single unit cannot manage.

The Companion model. Honda made a Companion version of the EU2000i with a built-in 30-amp outlet. Paired with a standard unit, it lets you draw the combined power through one cord. Honda describes it as ideal for RVs.

Check the serial number before pairing with an EU2200i

Not every EU2000i can be linked to a newer EU2200i. Honda’s bulletin lists the compatible frame serial numbers: EAAJ-2017305 and higher, and all EACT numbers. Honda warns that pairing an EU2200i with an EU2000i outside those ranges may cause low voltage, which can damage tools and appliances. The serial number is stamped on the generator, and the manual shows where.

Three more rules from the manual:

  • Use only a Honda approved parallel cable kit. Honda sells these through its dealers.
  • Never connect or remove the parallel cable while a generator is running.
  • Never link different generator models, apart from the pairs Honda approves.

Honda EU2000i Maintenance Schedule

This is Honda’s own schedule. Follow whichever comes first, the months or the hours.

Source: maintenance schedule in the Honda EU2000i owner’s manual, late production.
Job When
Check engine oil level Each use
Change engine oil After the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours
Check air cleaner Each use
Clean air cleaner Every 3 months or 50 hours, more often in dust
Check and adjust spark plug Every 6 months or 100 hours
Replace spark plug Every year or 200 hours
Clean spark arrester Every 6 months or 100 hours
Clean fuel tank and filter Every 6 months or 100 hours (dealer job)
Check and adjust valve clearance Every year or 200 hours (dealer job)
Clean combustion chamber After every 300 hours (dealer job)
Check fuel tube Every 2 years, replace if necessary (dealer job)

Honda marks four of those jobs for a servicing dealer, unless you have the right tools and are mechanically skilled.

A few details make the routine jobs easier.

  • Oil. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil. Honda recommends SAE 10W-30 for general use, API service category SJ or later. The engine holds only 13.5 ounces.
  • Oil changes. There is no drain plug to undo. The manual says to drain the oil by tipping the generator toward the oil filler neck. Do it while the engine is warm.
  • Spark plug. NGK CR5HSB, gapped at 0.024 to 0.028 inch.
  • Air cleaner. It has two foam filters, a main one and an outer one. Check both.
  • Fuel. Regular unleaded with a pump octane of 86 or higher. No more than 10% ethanol.

Honda sells the parts for a basic service as one kit, which saves hunting for part numbers.

Everything for one service

Honda Oil Change Kit for EU2000 Generators (08207-10W30 KIT)

A genuine Honda kit with the three items a routine service needs. The listing names a quart of Honda 10W-30 oil, a CR5HSB spark plug and a Honda air filter.

  • Oil1 quart Honda 10W-30
  • Spark plugHonda CR5HSB
  • Air filterHonda 17211-Z07-000
  • PartsGenuine Honda
  • Oil changes per quartTwo, at 13.5 oz each
  • BrandHonda
  • Why it works: it matches the oil grade and the spark plug named in Honda’s manual, so there is no guessing.
  • Who it is best for: any EU2000i owner, and especially anyone who has just bought a used one with an unknown history.
  • What it solves: hard starting and rough running caused by old oil, a worn plug or a clogged filter.
  • Keep in mind: check the air filter matches the one in your generator before you fit it. Early and late units differ in small ways.

Fuel and Storage

Stale gasoline is the number one enemy of a small generator. Honda’s manual says fuel can deteriorate in as little as 30 days, and that old gasoline leaves gum deposits that clog the fuel system. It also says the warranty does not cover damage from neglected storage.

Honda gives a simple table. Find how long the generator will sit, then do what it says.

Source: storage table in the Honda EU2000i owner’s manual.
Storage time What Honda recommends
Less than 1 month No preparation needed
1 to 2 months Fill with fresh gasoline and add a gasoline stabilizer
2 months to 1 year Add stabilizer to fresh gasoline, then turn the fuel valve off and drain the carburetor float bowl
1 year or more Drain the fuel tank and carburetor, change the engine oil and lubricate the cylinder

A stabilizer such as STA-BIL Storage covers the first three rows. Our guides on how long gasoline lasts and how to store a generator explain each step.

Tip: close the vent before you move it

Before you carry or store the EU2000i, turn the engine switch off and move the fuel cap vent lever to OFF. This helps stop fuel leaking in transit. Then remember to open the vent again before the next start.

Common Honda EU2000i Problems and Fixes

Honda’s manual lists the usual causes in the order you should check them.

Source: troubleshooting charts in the Honda EU2000i owner’s manual.
Problem Check this Fix
Engine will not start Fuel cap vent lever is OFF Turn the lever ON
Engine will not start Engine switch is OFF Turn it ON
Engine will not start Out of fuel, or stale fuel Refuel. If the fuel is old, drain the tank and carburetor first
Engine will not start Low oil has tripped Oil Alert Add oil, switch off, then restart
Engine will not start Spark plug fouled, wet or wrongly gapped Clean, dry and gap the plug, or replace it
Engine lacks power Air filter clogged, or bad fuel Clean or replace the filter. Drain and refill with fresh gasoline
No power at the AC outlets Overload light is on Reduce the load, stop and restart the engine
No power at the AC outlets AC circuit protector has tripped Check the load, then reset the protector
No power at the AC outlets Cooling air inlet blocked, or a faulty appliance Clear the inlet. Try another appliance
No power at the DC outlet DC circuit protector is OFF Push it back ON

If none of those works, the manual points to a restricted fuel filter, a carburetor fault, an ignition fault or stuck valves. Those are dealer jobs.

In practice, most “won’t start” stories come down to the first four rows: a closed vent, a switch left off, old fuel or low oil. Our guide to a generator that won’t start covers the wider checks, and why a generator keeps shutting off helps with stalling.

Safety With an Older Generator

The EU2000i was designed before portable generators carried carbon monoxide sensors. It has no CO-MINDER, the shutoff system Honda fits to its current models.

No carbon monoxide shutoff

Never run the generator in a closed or partly closed space. Honda’s manual asks for at least 3 feet of clearance from buildings for cooling and fire safety. Safety agencies now go much further and advise keeping any generator at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointing away. Fit battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms indoors.

Two more points from the manual are worth knowing.

  • The neutral is not bonded to the frame. Honda notes that a receptacle tester will not read the same as it does on a home outlet. Mention this to your electrician if you use a transfer switch.
  • Standby power needs a professional. Any connection to a building’s wiring must be made by a qualified electrician and must isolate the generator from utility power.

Is a Used Honda EU2000i Worth Buying?

It can be an excellent buy. The design is simple, parts are easy to find and Honda still publishes every manual.

Just be realistic about three things.

  • The warranty has run out. Honda covered EU series generators for 36 months. The last EU2000i units were sold around 2018.
  • There is no CO shutoff and no app. Both arrived on later models.
  • You get 200 fewer watts than the EU2200i offers.

Before you hand over any money, run through this list.

  • Start it from cold and watch the green light. Count the blinks to estimate its running hours.
  • Note the frame serial number if you ever plan to pair it with an EU2200i.
  • Check the oil. It should be clean and up to the mark.
  • Smell the fuel. A sour smell means old gasoline and a likely carburetor clean.
  • Plug in a real load, such as a heater, and listen for surging.
  • Look at both foam air filters and the spark plug.
  • Check the fuel cap vent lever and the recoil cord for damage.

Honda EU2000i vs EU2200i: What Changed?

Honda describes the EU2200i as 10% more power in the same lightweight, compact package. The spec sheets back that up.

EU2000i figures are from Honda’s owner’s manuals. EU2200i figures are from Honda’s official spec page, checked October 2026.
Spec Honda EU2000i Honda EU2200i
Maximum output 2,000 W 2,200 W
Rated output 1,600 W 1,800 W
Engine GX100, 98.5 cc GXR120, 121 cc
Fuel tank 0.95 gal 0.95 gal
Dimensions 20.2 x 11.4 x 16.7 in 20.0 x 11.4 x 16.7 in
Dry weight About 46 lb 47.4 lb
CO shutoff No Yes, CO-MINDER
Bluetooth app No Yes
Fuel-off position to run the carburetor dry Not listed Yes

Honda lists other improvements too: a bigger oil filler opening and a longer spout for cleaner oil changes, and a larger ventilation area for better cooling.

So should you replace a healthy EU2000i? Not for the extra power alone. The stronger reasons are the carbon monoxide shutoff and a fresh 3-year warranty.

The Honda Generators That Replaced the EU2000i

The official successor

Honda EU2200i 2,200 Watt Inverter Generator (EU2200ITAN)

The generator Honda built to replace the EU2000i. It is almost exactly the same size, with 200 more watts, a carbon monoxide shutoff and app control.

  • Maximum output2,200 W
  • Rated output1,800 W
  • Sound level48 to 57 dB(A)
  • Run time3.2 to 8.1 hours
  • Dry weight47.4 lb
  • Warranty on listing3-year residential
  • Why it works: it keeps everything people liked about the EU2000i and adds CO-MINDER, which shuts the generator down if carbon monoxide builds up around it.
  • Who it is best for: EU2000i owners ready for a new machine, and first-time buyers who want the current model.
  • What it solves: the two gaps in the old design, which are safety monitoring and a little more starting power for motors.
  • Good to know: Honda says it can run in parallel with later EU2000i units, within the serial numbers listed earlier in this guide.
  • Keep in mind: the listing says this version is not available in California. It is 120 volts only.

Common Mistakes With the Honda EU2000i (and the Fix)

Mistake 1Leaving the fuel cap vent closed.
FixTurn the vent lever ON before starting. It is the first check in Honda’s own chart.
Mistake 2Running it at 2,000 watts for hours.
FixKeep long loads at or below 1,600 watts. Honda limits maximum power to 30 minutes.
Mistake 3Storing it with untreated gasoline.
FixAdd stabilizer for short breaks. Drain the carburetor for longer ones.
Mistake 4Skipping the first oil change.
FixChange the oil after the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours.
Mistake 5Overfilling the oil.
FixThe engine holds only 13.5 ounces. Fill to the top of the filler neck with the generator level.
Mistake 6Using the DC outlet for gadgets.
FixIt is for charging 12-volt automotive batteries only, and it is not regulated.
Mistake 7Pairing it with any EU2200i.
FixCheck the frame serial number against Honda’s compatible range first.
Mistake 8Plugging or unplugging the parallel cable while running.
FixStop both generators before you connect or remove it.

Pro Tips for Honda EU2000i Owners

  • Count the blinks. The green light tells you the running hours each time you start it. Use that to time your oil changes.
  • Leave Eco-Throttle on for light loads, and switch it off before starting a motor or a big appliance.
  • Start the largest load first, let the engine settle, then add the rest.
  • Run it for a few minutes every month. A generator that sits for a year rarely starts first time.
  • Keep a spare CR5HSB plug in the tool bag. It is small, cheap and often the fix.
  • Lock it up. A light, valuable generator is easy to carry away from a campsite.
  • Download the manual for your serial number. Honda lists a separate manual for each production range.

Real-Life Scenarios: What Should You Do?

These are typical situations that owners describe in forums and reviews. They are examples to help you decide, not quotes from real people.

πŸ•οΈ The long-time owner

Your EU2000i still starts on the second pull and powers the campsite every summer.

There is nothing to fix. It just needs fresh oil, a plug and clean fuel.

Best move: service it and keep it

🚐 The RV upgrader

One EU2000i will not start your air conditioner, and you do not want a 130-pound generator.

A second unit in parallel adds the power and keeps the weight low.

Best move: add an EU2200i Companion

πŸ›’ The used-market shopper

You found a tidy EU2000i for sale, but you cannot tell how hard it has worked.

The green light’s blinks and the serial number tell you most of the story.

Best move: check hours, then decide
