Kohler has been building generators since 1920, and the home standby models are still sold under the Kohler name even though the company behind them is now called Rehlko. That one fact causes most of the confusion buyers have today.
This guide explains the brand from the ground up. You will learn who makes Kohler generators now, what the company has built over a century, what is in the current home range, how the dealer network and warranty work, and how to keep a Kohler in good health.
Brand facts come from Kohler’s official home generator website and Kohler specification sheets. We have no connection to Kohler or Rehlko, and we have not tested these generators.

Quick answer
Kohler home generators are permanent standby generators that run on natural gas or propane and start automatically in an outage. The business that makes them was called Kohler Energy until 2024 and is now named Rehlko. Kohler says homeowners get the same generators, dealer network, warranty and support as before. The home range runs from 10 kW to 150 kW, with the 14RCA, 20RCA and 26RCA as the core models. They are sold and installed through certified dealers and carry a premium five-year limited warranty.
How we put this guide together
We are not affiliated with Kohler or Rehlko. History, lineup, dealer, warranty and maintenance details come from Kohler’s official home generator website, including its history timeline and FAQ, and from Kohler spec sheets for the 20RCA and 26RCA. Where we repeat a claim Kohler makes about itself, we say so. Product box details come from current Amazon listings. We do not publish prices.

Who Makes Kohler Generators Now?
For most of their history, Kohler generators were made by Kohler Co., the Wisconsin company better known for kitchen and bathroom fixtures. That changed recently.
- The power business was separated. Kohler’s energy division, called Kohler Energy, became its own company.
- A new majority owner arrived. The investment firm Platinum Equity took a majority stake in May 2024, and Kohler Co. kept a minority share.
- The business was renamed. In September 2024 it became Rehlko.
So is a Kohler generator still a Kohler? Kohler’s own FAQ answers the question directly. It says Kohler Generators “is part of Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy,” and that homeowners continue to receive the same Kohler home standby generators, with the same dealer network, warranty protection and customer support.
Rehlko’s own website shows where home generators fit. The company describes three businesses:
- Industrial Energy Systems: industrial generators and power systems for places such as data centers and hospitals.
- Powertrain Technologies: engines, from combustion through to hybrid and electric.
- Home Energy: the Kohler home backup generators this guide is about.
Key insight: if one dealer quotes a “Kohler” 20RCA and another quotes a “Rehlko” 20RCA, compare the model numbers. It is the same generator.
A Century of Kohler Generators
Kohler publishes a timeline of its generator history. These are the moments it highlights.
| Year | Milestone, as Kohler tells it |
|---|---|
| 1920 | Kohler enters the power business with the Kohler Automatic Power and Light |
| 1929 | Admiral Richard Byrd takes five Kohler generators to his Antarctic base camp |
| 1931 | Kohler generators help light the construction of the Hoover Dam |
| 1939 to 1945 | US armed forces use Kohler generators on land and at sea |
| 1948 | Kohler begins making and marketing small engines |
| 1960 | Kohler produces its one-millionth engine |
| 1980 | PowerBoost technology debuts for starting large motor loads |
| 1986 | Command engines arrive, with overhead valves and hydraulic valve lifters |
| 1995 | Kohler teams up with the Federal Aviation Administration on airport backup power |
| 2009 | The OnCue remote monitoring system launches |
| 2020 | Kohler marks 100 years of backup power |
| 2023 | The 26 kW home standby generator is introduced |
| 2024 | Kohler Energy becomes Rehlko |
One story from that timeline is worth retelling. Kohler says Admiral Byrd returned to the South Pole four years after his first expedition with seven more generators, and found the original five still working.
Kohler uses this history to make a point about trust. Its website says that homes, hospitals, airports, nuclear power plants and the National Weather Service rely on Kohler generators. That is a marketing claim, but it does reflect a real difference: Kohler sells into heavy commercial markets as well as homes.
The Current Kohler Home Generator Range
Kohler’s home website lists 15 standby generators, all fueled by natural gas or propane. They fall into two families.
| Model | Family | Rating on LP | Rating on NG | Kohler positions it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10RESV | Air-cooled | 10 kW | See Kohler’s page | The basics |
| 12RESV | Air-cooled | 12 kW | 11 kW | The basics |
| 14RCA | Air-cooled | 14 kW | 12 kW | The basics, and off-grid use |
| 20RCA | Air-cooled | 20 kW | 18 kW | Most major appliances |
| 26RCA | Air-cooled | 26 kW | 24 kW | The entire home |
| 24RCLA | Liquid-cooled | 24 kW | 21 kW | Larger homes |
| 48RCLC | Liquid-cooled | 48 kW | 48 kW | Everything on 200-amp service |
The liquid-cooled family continues upward through the 30RCLA, 38RCLC and 60RCLB to a 150 kW unit.
Kohler’s own sizing tool sorts homes into three groups: “just the basics,” “live comfortably” and “power it all.” For the basics, which it describes as the furnace fan, refrigerator, sump pump, lights and well pump, it suggests the 10RESV, 12RESV and 14RCA.
For help choosing a size and a type, see our guides to generators for home use and whole-house generators.
How to read a Kohler model name
- The number is the size in kilowatts. A 20RCA is a 20 kW generator on propane.
- RCA means the generator alone. The transfer switch is sold separately.
- RCAL means the generator comes with a transfer switch.
- RCL marks the liquid-cooled models, such as the 24RCLA.
- RES marks the smaller and earlier models, such as the 12RESV.
What Kohler Says Sets Its Generators Apart
Every brand has a pitch. Here is Kohler’s, with the source of each claim.
| Feature | What Kohler says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| PowerBoost | Starts large loads without dropping power to other appliances | The lights should not sag when the air conditioner starts |
| Commercial engines | Command PRO engines, tested for 2,000 hours of continuous operation | An engine designed for hard use |
| Fast response | A listed 10-second response on the air-cooled models | A short wait in the dark |
| Enclosure | Tested to withstand 181 mph winds | Reassurance in hurricane country |
| Quiet exercise | The 26RCA exercises at 56 dB(A) | Less noise for you and the neighbors |
| Colors | A choice of colors and two camouflage patterns on the RCA models | Easier to satisfy a homeowner association |
| Remote monitoring | The free Kohler Energy Management app | Check the generator from your phone |
Treat these as the manufacturer’s statements. They are useful for comparing brands on paper, but an installer’s care and a proper gas supply matter just as much in real life.

Where Are Kohler Generators Made?
Kohler’s FAQ is clear on this. It says its residential standby generators, including their engines, are designed, engineered and assembled in the USA.
It adds a fair qualification. Kohler says it works with trusted global suppliers for select components, while many key parts are sourced and manufactured in the United States.
The 20RCA’s product page lists its country of origin as the US.
How to Buy a Kohler Generator
Kohler sells through a network of certified dealers. Its website says that network spans the United States and Canada, with more than 3,000 dealers.
The process Kohler describes has four steps.
- Make contact by phone or through the free quote form.
- Get connected to a local certified Kohler dealer.
- Receive a no-obligation quote for the generator and its installation.
- Have the dealer install it.
You can also buy the equipment from a retailer. Kohler’s site names Acme Tools, Amazon, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards among others. If you do, Kohler says to find a certified dealer for the installation, and it warns that authorized installation is important to keep the warranty valid.
Three more points from Kohler’s FAQ help you plan.
- Quotes need a visit. Kohler says an installation quote depends on your fuel source, local permits and where the generator will sit, so a dealer has to see your home.
- Financing comes from dealers. Kohler does not offer financing directly, but says many certified dealers do.
- Installation is not a DIY job. Kohler says certified installers handle permits and coordinate licensed electricians and pipefitters.
Warranty and What It Covers
Kohler lists a premium five-year limited warranty on its home generators. The spec sheets for the 20RCA and 26RCA give more detail.
| Point | What Kohler states |
|---|---|
| Length | 5 years or 2,000 hours, limited |
| What it covers | Parts, labor and travel for the full warranty period |
| Dealer travel | Kohler says dealers travel up to 200 miles for service |
| Applies to | Standby use in locations served by a reliable utility |
| Extended cover | Available. Ask a dealer. |
The fourth line matters. The standard warranty is written for backup use on a home with utility power. If you plan to run a generator off-grid as your main supply, ask the dealer which models and which warranty terms apply. Kohler lists the 14RCA as an off-grid capable model.
Service and Maintenance
Kohler compares a generator to a car: even good equipment needs professional care. Its service page lists what a comprehensive maintenance visit typically includes.
- A full system inspection by a trained technician.
- Oil and air filter replacement.
- Battery testing.
- A check of the automatic transfer switch.
- A diagnostic review and performance check.
Kohler says maintenance plans usually mean one or two scheduled visits a year, with priority service in storm season.
It also publishes simple owner guidance.
- Check the oil after every 8 to 24 hours of running, depending on the model.
- Use 5W-30 full synthetic oil, which Kohler says the generators ship with. Do not mix synthetic and conventional oil.
- To shut down by hand, switch the generator’s circuit breaker off, let it run with no load for 2 to 5 minutes, then press OFF on the controller.
- In cold climates, Kohler recommends cold weather accessories when temperatures fall below 32 °F.
Kohler’s home generator support line is 1-833-393-6650, open Monday to Friday. Our generator maintenance checklist covers the general routine.
The Transfer Switch: Kohler’s “Brain”
Kohler calls the automatic transfer switch “the brain behind your home generator.” It starts the generator when the utility fails and switches back when power returns.
Kohler’s site lists two families for homes.
- RXT switches in 100, 200 and 400 amps, in standard and service-entrance versions.
- RDT switches, including a 200-amp service-entrance model with a 42-space load center.
Kohler notes that most regions require an automatic transfer switch for a standby generator installation. An RCAL package includes one. With an RCA model, the dealer chooses the switch to suit your panel.
Kohler vs Generac vs Champion on Paper
Shoppers nearly always compare Kohler with Generac, and often with Champion. Here are the published facts side by side.
| Point | Kohler | Generac | Champion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air-cooled home standby sizes | 10 to 26 kW | 10 to 28 kW | 8.5 to 26 kW |
| Larger home standby models | Liquid-cooled, 24 to 150 kW | Up to 150 kW | None listed |
| Stated standby warranty | Premium 5-year limited | 5-year limited | 10-year limited |
| Dealer network, as stated | More than 3,000 dealers | About 10,000 dealers | Dealer finder on its site |
| Portable generators | Not part of the home range | Yes, a full line | Yes, a full line |
What does that tell you?
- Kohler and Generac cover the same ground in standby power, from small homes to very large ones.
- Generac states a much larger dealer count. In some areas that makes service easier to find.
- Champion states the longest standby warranty but stops at 26 kW.
- Kohler’s home website lists standby generators only. If you want a portable generator, you will be looking at another brand.
No table can tell you which is “best.” The quality of the installer near you is often the deciding factor. Our guide to portable vs standby generators helps if you are still choosing a type.
Kohler Products You Can Order Online

Common Mistakes When Buying a Kohler (and the Fix)
Pro Tips for Kohler Buyers and Owners
- Ask for the motor starting figure. Kohler publishes peak motor starting kVA, which shows how well a generator copes with an air conditioner starting.
- Pick the color early. Kohler offers a range of colors on the 14RCA, 20RCA and 26RCA, and it can help with a homeowner association.
- Register the product. Kohler’s site has a product warranty registration page.
- Set up the app. The Kohler Energy Management app lets you check the generator from anywhere.
- Keep the key where you can find it. Kohler says the enclosure opens with a key that is turned 45 degrees.
- Know how to shut it down. Breaker off, run 2 to 5 minutes with no load, then press OFF.
