Honda generators are known for three things: they are quiet, they sip fuel, and they tend to start when you need them. That reputation is why a small red Honda is the generator you see at campsites, food trucks and tailgates across the country. It is also why they cost more than most rivals.

Here is the short version. Honda sells four families of portable generators. The EU series are the super-quiet inverter models most people want. The EM series are deluxe home backup units, the EG series are economy models, and the EB series are built for job sites. Sizes run from 1,000 watts to 10,000 watts, and every current model includes Honda’s CO-MINDER carbon monoxide shutoff.

This guide explains each series in plain English, gives you real specs for the four most popular EU models, covers the famous EU2000i that so many people still search for, and helps you pick the right size for camping, RV use or home backup.

Quick answer

Honda’s best-known generators are the EU series inverter models. The EU2200i (2,200 watts) is the pick for camping and light backup, the EU3200i (3,200 watts) is a lightweight choice for RV air conditioners, the EU3000iS adds electric start and very long run times, and the EU7000iS (7,000 watts, 120/240 volts) is the home backup model. All four include CO-MINDER carbon monoxide shutoff. Honda’s current lineup has no dual-fuel models.

Why Do People Pay More for a Honda?

Honda generators are rarely the cheapest option on the shelf. People buy them anyway, and the reasons are practical.

  • They are quiet. The EU2200i is rated at 48 to 57 dB(A). Honda calls that less noise than a normal conversation.
  • They make clean power. The EU models are inverter generators. Honda describes the output as reliable power for computers and other sensitive equipment.
  • They are light on fuel. Honda’s Eco Throttle system slows the engine when demand is low, which stretches every tank.
  • They are built around Honda’s own engines. Honda says its generators use easy-starting Honda four-stroke engines.
  • They have modern safety built in. Every model on Honda’s current lineup page is listed with CO-MINDER carbon monoxide detection.

The honest downside is the price. You get less wattage per dollar than you do with most other brands. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much quiet running and long life matter to you.

Key insight: with Honda you are not paying for more watts. You are paying for the same watts delivered quietly, cleanly and for a long time.

Honda’s Four Generator Series Explained

Honda describes its range in one sentence: top-rated EU series super-quiet generators, the deluxe EM series, the industrial EB series and the economy EG generators. Here is what that means in practice.

Lineup from Honda’s official generator page, checked October 2026.
Series Built for Current models What stands out
EU, super quiet Camping, RVs, tailgating, quiet home backup EU1000i, EU2200i, EU2200i Companion, EU3000iS, EU3200i, EU7000iS Inverter power, very low noise, light weight
EM, deluxe Home backup EM5000SX, EM6500SX 120/240 V, electric start, 7,000 watts for 10 seconds to start big loads
EG, economy Budget-minded backup and general use EG4000 120/240 V and a long run time of up to 14.8 hours
EB, industrial Job sites EB2200i, EB5000, EB6500, EB10000 GFCI protection and OSHA worksite compliance

A few details from Honda’s page are worth knowing:

  • The EU2200i Companion has a built-in 30-amp outlet for easy parallel and RV use. Two EU2200i units can be linked for more power.
  • The EM5000SX and EM6500SX can both deliver 7,000 watts for 10 seconds to start larger equipment. Honda lists run times of up to 10.5 and 9.8 hours.
  • The EB10000 is the biggest, at 10,000 watts, with electric start. Honda says it has the best fuel efficiency and lowest noise rating in its class.

The Honda EU Series at a Glance

These are the four EU models most people choose between.

Figures are from Honda’s official spec pages, checked October 2026. Weights are dry weights, before fuel and oil.

Run time ranges make sense once you know how they are measured. The short number is at rated load and the long number is at one-quarter load. In real life you will land somewhere in between.

Notice one surprise in the table. The EU3200i has a higher maximum than the EU3000iS, but a lower running figure: 2,600 watts against 2,800. If your load is steady and close to the limit, that difference matters.

What About the Honda EU2000i?

A lot of people still search for the Honda 2000i generator, and for good reason. The EU2000i was one of Honda’s most popular generators for years, and many are still in use.

The EU2000i is no longer in the lineup. Honda replaced it with the EU2200i, which reached dealers in the spring of 2018 with 10% more power. If you own an EU2000i or are looking at a used one, here are the published specs.

EU2000i figures are from Honda’s owner’s manuals, with the sound level from retailer spec sheets. EU2200i figures are from Honda’s official spec page.
Spec Honda EU2000i (discontinued) Honda EU2200i (current)
Maximum output 2,000 W 2,200 W
Rated output 1,600 W 1,800 W

Dimensions 20.2 x 11.4 x 16.7 inches 20.0 x 11.4 x 16.7 inches
Dry weight 45.6 to 45.9 lb 47.4 lb
Sound level 53 to 59 dB(A) 48 to 57 dB(A)
CO-MINDER No Yes
Bluetooth app No Yes

In other words, the EU2200i is almost exactly the same size and weight as the generator it replaced. Honda describes it as 10% more power in the same lightweight, compact package.

So is a used EU2000i worth buying? It can be, if it has been cared for. Just remember what it lacks: no carbon monoxide shutoff, no app, and 200 fewer watts. That last point matters more than it sounds. The extra power is often the difference between starting a small air conditioner and not starting it.

Here is a useful detail for owners. Honda says the EU2200i can run in parallel with later EU2000i units. Its 2018 bulletin lists the compatible frame serial numbers as EAAJ-2017305 and higher, plus all EACT numbers. Check yours before you buy a parallel cable, because Honda warns that other pairings can cause low voltage.

What Size Honda Generator Do You Need?

Choosing a size is simple once you write down what you want to run.

  1. List what must run at the same time. A camping list and a home backup list look very different.
  2. Add up the running watts. Use the label on each device.
  3. Find the biggest motor. Air conditioners, refrigerators and pumps need a burst of extra power to start.
  4. Match the total to a model. Leave some headroom. A generator running flat out is louder, thirstier and wears faster.

Here is how the Honda range maps to real jobs, using Honda’s own descriptions.

  • Lights, a TV, fans and small tools: Honda lists these for the 1,000-watt EU1000i.
  • TV, satellite, fridge and coffee pot: Honda lists these for the EU2200i.
  • A furnace, a fridge and most 13,500 BTU RV air conditioners: Honda lists these for the EU3000iS and the EU3200i.
  • Home backup power, RVs and outdoor events: Honda lists these for the EU7000iS.
  • A fridge, furnace and well pump: Honda lists these for the EM5000SX and EM6500SX.

Tip: two small generators can beat one big one

Honda says two EU2200i generators can be linked with an optional parallel cable for up to 4,400 watts. That gives you more power when you need it and a light, quiet single unit when you do not. You can carry each one with one hand, and if one ever fails you still have power. The Companion model adds the 30-amp outlet that makes this setup simple for RVs.

Key Honda Features, in Plain English

Inverter power

A conventional generator makes electricity directly from a spinning engine, so the power quality rises and falls with engine speed. An inverter generator cleans the power up electronically first. The result is steady electricity that is safe for laptops, TVs and other electronics. Our guide to inverter vs conventional generators explains the difference in depth.

Eco Throttle

Honda’s Eco Throttle lets the engine slow down when you are only using a little power. That is why an EU3000iS can run for up to 19.6 hours on one tank at light load. It also makes the generator quieter.

CO-MINDER

CO-MINDER continually monitors carbon monoxide levels and shuts the generator down automatically before the level near it becomes dangerous. It is a safety net. It does not make it safe to run a generator indoors or close to the house.

The My Generator app

Several models work with Honda’s My Generator smartphone app over Bluetooth. Honda describes remote operation and monitoring, a wireless stop function and service reminders. The EU3000iS is the exception in this guide. It does not have the app.

Does Honda Make a Dual-Fuel Generator?

This is one of the most common Honda questions, so here is a clear answer. None of the models on Honda’s current US generator page is listed as dual fuel. They run on gasoline.

You will find third-party kits that convert Honda generators to propane or natural gas. We cannot vouch for those. A conversion changes how the engine was certified to run, and it may affect your warranty, so check with Honda or a dealer before you buy one.

If running on propane matters to you, it is simpler to buy a generator that was designed for it from the start. Our guide to dual-fuel generators explains how they work and who needs one.

Using a Honda for Home Backup

For home backup, look at the EU7000iS first, then the EM5000SX and EM6500SX. All three give you 240-volt power, which a well pump and most transfer switches need.

There are two safe ways to connect any of them:

  • Extension cords from the generator to each appliance. Simple, but it cannot power hard-wired equipment such as a furnace.
  • A transfer switch or interlock with an inlet box, installed by an electrician. One cord connects the generator, and your chosen circuits run as normal.

Safety first, even with CO-MINDER

Run every generator outdoors only, never in a garage, basement or enclosed porch. Safety agencies advise keeping it at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointing away. CO-MINDER is a backup, so fit battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms indoors too. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet to power your house. Use a transfer switch or interlock fitted by a qualified electrician. Our guide to connecting a generator to your house safely explains the options.

Fuel, Storage and Maintenance

A Honda’s reputation for reliability does not make it immune to stale fuel. Old gasoline is the number one reason any small generator will not start.

  • Use fresh gasoline and treat stored fuel with a stabilizer such as STA-BIL Storage.
  • Run it regularly. A short run every month keeps the fuel system clear and the battery charged on electric-start models.
  • Follow the manual. Honda’s owner’s manual gives the oil type, the service intervals and the storage steps for your exact model.
  • Use the app. On supported models, the My Generator app sends service reminders.
  • Store it properly. Our guide on how to store a generator has a full checklist, and how long gasoline lasts explains fuel life.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Honda Generator (and the Fix)

Mistake 1Buying the EU2200i to run an RV air conditioner.
FixHonda lists the EU3200i and EU3000iS for most 13,500 BTU RV air conditioners. Size for the air conditioner first.
Mistake 2Ignoring the difference between maximum and running watts.
FixPlan around the running figure: 1,800 watts for the EU2200i, 2,600 for the EU3200i, 2,800 for the EU3000iS and 5,500 for the EU7000iS.
Mistake 3Expecting 240 volts from a small EU model.
FixOnly the EU7000iS and the EM, EG and larger EB models offer 120/240 volts.
Mistake 4Assuming a Honda can run on propane out of the box.
FixHonda’s current lineup is gasoline only. Choose a purpose-built dual-fuel generator if you need propane.
Mistake 5Ordering a model that cannot be sold in your state.
FixCheck the listing. Some versions are not available in California, where a different model applies.
Mistake 6Buying a used EU2000i without knowing what it lacks.
FixIt has no CO-MINDER and 200 fewer watts than the EU2200i. Price it accordingly.
Mistake 7Running it close to the house because it is quiet.
FixQuiet does not mean safe. Keep it at least 20 feet away, with the exhaust pointing away.
Mistake 8Leaving fuel in it for months.
FixTreat the fuel, run the generator monthly and follow the storage steps in the manual.

Pro Tips for Honda Owners

  • Buy for your biggest motor. If one appliance decides the size, choose the model Honda lists for it.
  • Think in pairs. Two parallel-ready EU2200i units are easier to move and store than one large generator.
  • Use Eco Throttle for light loads and switch it off when you expect a big motor to start.
  • Keep the battery healthy on electric-start models. A maintainer in storage prevents a dead battery on the day you need it.
  • Register the warranty. The listings state a 3-year residential warranty.
  • Carry a spare spark plug and the right oil. They cost little and save a trip.
  • Protect it from theft. A small, valuable generator is easy to carry away. Use a cable lock at campsites and job sites.

For a routine you can follow through the year, see our generator maintenance checklist.
